U2 – The generation clash

The Irish mega band U2 returns with “No line on the Horizon”, a controversial and experimental album. Our very own SirDorian and NYC Darling Tami Sunderson discuss this comeback and what it means for a thirty year old guy and a soon to be twenty something.

Update: WIN one out of three limited Box Sets of “No line on the Horizon” here.

u2 no line on the horizon

It doesn’t matter if you love or hate this band, their musical impact is big without a doubt.
A good example these days are big names like Coldplay, The Killers, and Kings of Leon who recently got two Brit Awards as we reported. But there are so many bands out who are widely influenced by U2.

Our opponents have a different history in “how they get in touch with U2 for the first time”.
SirDorian, almost 30 years old, bought “Zooropa”, loved the fresh style, went to the Popmart tour and fell in love with them. His favourite Records are “Boy” & “Achtung Baby”. The new one is a solid record in his opinion. Not a classic U2 album but a more experimental one with great Moments on it. “It’s an old fashioned Album, not a collection of Songs.

Tami was eleven years old when it comes to “All that you can’t leave behind” and the Elevation tour afterwards. She went the show with her Parents (they are U2 addicted). One and a half year ago, Tami moved
from the Denmark to New York and is still in love with “All that you can´t leave behind” and “Joshua Tree”.
But Tami isn’t still an addicted U2 fan. She listens to many Acts and her love goes to Animal Collective, Hercules and Love Affair and other edgy groups. She thinks that “No line of the horizon” tries so much to be something else which it isn’t and it’s far away to grow on her. The Eno & Lanois domination on the Record is also a big problem for her.

Both got the chance to get a listen to “No line on the Horizon” after it leaked a week before the official release, and here is their verdict, part 1.

No line on the Horizon

Tami: Have you heard the alternate version? It rocks your socks off. I’m more into this one. I miss this edge driven guitar riff here.
SirDorian: It’s a good opener and it leads the way for the rest of the album.
But it’s not “Zoo Station”, which was their best and god beware us from another lukewarm “Beautiful Day”.
Tami: “Beautiful Day“ was the first U2 song i´ve ever heard. I was eleven and i loved it.
SirDorian: And nowadays?
Tami: I still like it, but it´s not my favorite song.
SirDorian: I didn’t like it at that time and I still don’t like it. But it’s not about ATYCLB now!
Tami: I know, so “Magnificent” is the next one.

Magnificent

SirDorian: It starts out with a good Intro, some electronica and synths included. This could be from The Killers.
Tami: The Intro is great. And even the Hook turn in. But then? Something happened with this song, but i don´t know what. Maybe the refrain set in too early and kills is it a bit. Good Song, though.
SirDorian: I think it will become a classic.
Tami: Don’t think so. It´s good. But whereis the sing a long chorus? Can´t find em. The whole tune is only a straight wink to their big times.
SirDorian: Oh, it could be good for the stadium.
Tami: Again, it´s not a sing a long.
SirDorian: We will see. I think it´s a great one for us most of their fans.

Moment of Surrender

Tami: I don´t get into this. This is Eno/Lanois featuring U2. And I also don’t like Bono’s voice on this.
SirDorian: It’s a very sad song and shows the dominating dark mood of the album in a good way. It offers so many layers and you have to listen with attention, not just by the way. And you can still hear African drums which are in most of the songs.
Tami: If I want to hear African influences, than I listen to Animal Collective or Amadou & Mariam. I know that U2 spend some time in Morocco and I also know that it wasn’t the first time that they did this but songs would also work WITHOUT this. Too much is too much. Listen more Bonaparte ;)
SirDorian: I like Bonaparte;) “Moment of surrender” is a mid tempo Song and they use a wide range of Instruments in it. Sometimes I feel sitting in the studio in Morocco with them. There is so much creativity around and most important for the whole album, they enjoy it again to make music. I’ve missed that so much at the last two records.
Tami: When mid age Man get their love back to the music. Are you kidding?
It’s about good tunes and good records not a good time for those who made it. I don’t care about that.
SirDorian: You’re sounding like me when I was 19. 10 years after, I’ve totally changed my mind.
Tami: Do will still talk about “Moment of Surrender”?
SirDorian: No, let’s talk about the next one.

Unknown Caller

Tami: “For Gods sake. What’s that? Was my first thought about this song? Birds. I mean, Birds. But I’ve heard this song was also recorded due their Morocco sessions. This influence makes the whole atmosphere through the track.
Ah, and the intro reminds me of “Walk on”, just a tiny guitar outtake, but it does.
SirDorian: Haha. I really don’t think that this is “Walk on”. Anyway, I love the quote “Restart and reboot yourself”. And there is a clear Arcade Fire influence.
Tami: The Edge with another solo. It starts to getting boring. I´m not a particular fan of guitar solos. They are so done. Where do you hear Arcade Fire?
SirDorian: Especially at the end of the song.
Tami: I see. Anyway, it’s a way better than Moment of Surrender. And this Choir of Men Idea came from The Killers;)
SirDorian: That’s true. But who started out with “oh oh oh oh”. Because you can hear that from The Killers, Coldplay, Kings of Leon, U2…the list is long.
Tami: I think they are hanging too much out together. I heard the Bono performed with Killers, Coldplay at a Show after the Brits.
SirDorian: Sure. That was funny. And yeah, they are all Friends and Coldplay also worked with Brian Eno. So probably that “oh oh oh oh” was his Idea? And you really should listen three albums in a row. Start with Coldplay “Viva la vida”, go to “No line on the Horizon” and end with Kings of Leon and “Only by the Night”.
But let’s go to “I’ll go crazy if I don’t go crazy tonight”

I’ll go crazy if I don’t go crazy tonight

Tami: This is definitely the WORST Song Title I’ve ever heard from U2. I mean, “Crazy” makes sense. But this title is crap.
SirDorian
: It’s catchy as hell. Would fit on “All that you can´t leave behind”
Tami: For sure. And it doesn’t fit on this new record. But I love this Song. It has all what I want to have from a U2 song. This is the upcoming tour hit, I promise. Imagine this sing a long in a huge crowd. Wow, I can’t wait for the tour.
SirDorian: I know what you mean. “It’s not a hill it’s a Mountain”, that’s a great chorus line and a sing a long indeed. And the song is also strong because it grows and get big at the end with strings etc. It’s a new classic.
And now lets go and don´t forget to put on your boots:)

i haven´t expect to see U2 on this website. i´m really surprised. but their new album
isn´t good at all. it´s achtung baby who was the right one back in the days. but what
is the message of no line on the horizon? can´t find one. and it is too much Eno.

  • thefly1979 (author) said:

the message is that U2 are back and did not play safe anymore after ATCLB and HTAAB. it´s not a record to get new young fans, it´s a very mature but real good record.

U2 are old. they should settle for retirement.

    @ well i can remember

    @alexey

    @well, i cant remember

    (@admin – sorry for offtopic-discussion ;)
