Little Boots vs. La Roux – the electro pop clash

It is the year of female Electro Pop with Breakthrough Artists like Lady Gaga, La Roux and Little Boots. Lady Gaga brought show us her “Pokerface” and break into the Mainstream, La Roux was “In for the Kill” and Little Boots is still “Meddle”. Let´s have a look to the most important British Female Eelectro Pop Ambassadors, their Music, their Style and more.

The Beginning

Elly Jackson, the red haired girl (from where she took the Name La Roux) was more into Folk Music from Nick Drake than into proper Synth & Electronic Music Stuff. But that was before she enters the Rave Scene in her mid teen age. Since then things changed and especially the last five years of her current life were inspiration enough for her to write it down and bring out her Debut Album which is out since June 29th and claimed to the second spot in the UK.

On this Point, I also wanted to post a La Roux Video. Sadly, it seems that their Record Company did not allow this:(

Victoria Hesketh´s steps into the Music Biz were different. At the age of sixteen, Hesketh appeared in a TV Show called Pop Idol, toured with a Jazz Band before she became Singer in Dead Disco. Yes, it´s that Dead Disco we loved a few years ago. But they never enter their big time. At the end of the Disco, Victoria decide to become “Little Boots” and released some intimate Videos (shot in her Room at her parents House) of Cover Songs on her Myspace and Youtube where she gain loads of attention in a very fast Way. Since June 6th, her Debut Album “Hands” is in Stores with a Number five UK Chart Peak Position.

The Remixes

Fake Blood, A1 Bassline, Fred Falke, The Golden Filter, Designer Drugs and many more. It seems that everyone wants to Remix her songs, and the most outstanding one come from Fake Blood who made an impressive work on “Stuck on Repeat”.

In the La Roux Zone, we have Mixes from The Twelves, Tepr, Zinc, Foamo, IAMXL and some more. Sorry Elly, but this is also a strike for Little Boots, because she got the better Producers;)

The Music

When we talk about the Remixes, it’s also important to compare their Albums and Music. So if you just read this from the NME, you can see what we think about the songs. Not the same thoughts with every tune. But at the End of the Day, La Roux wins and against their prophecy, she also won the commercial Competition in the UK. So is the British Public more into emotional and tentative Sounds? Obviously the clean and the precision of “Hands” are not that interesting for them. The La Roux debut album offer more unexpected things and is less Ibiza/Rimini suitable.

So this Round was a Kiss with a Fist for Victoria and La Roux got her first point.

The Style

(Do they had the same  Label or Designer????;) At least, the same Idea)

I really love the big show. And for the big show, there is no need to take less make up etc. Little Boots is totally in love with all Golden Stuff. Probably that was the reason why “the Golden Filter” has done a remix of “New in town”. Anyway. Elly likes to get dressed very androgyn and it seems that she is totally into the 80ies Games World, Victoria prefer a more female glamorous Style which she also show in her first Video to “New in Town”. Their style is great but different, even the Music sounds often similar.

(Smokin hot. )

As for me, I like the style of Victoria a bit more then Ellys. But in a head to head thing, i think it is a tie. Because it is also Nova Dando who did a great Job on the La Roux Style.  That means means that we have 3:2 at the moment.

The Success

NME predict more commercial Success for Little Boots but that did not happen. It is La Roux who sold more Records in the UK and she is on the way to breakthrough in Germany. But there is a difference to the UK. In Germany, most people do not care that much about music. It´s all about Sing a Long or Stupid Beats. That’s all what counts. I think Little Boots got more chance to Breakthrough there. She gets more Airplay in the current Summer Disco Fever than La Roux and loads of love from Mainstream and Indy Magazines.

Probably she will not have huge success in the UK, but in the Mid – Europe Area, Little Boots is the next Big Star.

The Future

As I’ve said above, there are a few more better Signs for Little Boots to climb up the ladder in Mid – Europe. But we will see what happen in the next Weeks across the Discos. Mass media compare both of them to Lady Gaga, but also to Kylie. I don’t think that it is possible to be the next Kylie. These are too big Shoes for both, even Victoria rip off her sounds. But it is impossible to choose a winner on the long tail. It is another tie, because both sold loads of records, got some great critic and make music for the mainstream. We will see and time will tell :)

Result and Winner of our totally subjective Clash: a very tight 4:3 for Little Boots. And what would you say? Drop us a comment :)
