Hot Chip were rocking Vienna last weekend. At least kind of…

The reason why many musicians earn their money with playing in bands instead of spinning the records professionally, is very simple: They quite suck at the latter! Just because someone is a good guitar player, singer, drummer etc., does not automatically imply they would make a great DJ! And still, hiring members of famous bands to play at clubs is quite the fashion nowadays.

Last Saturday, Vienna’s legendary Pling Plong Klub invited Joe Goddard, responsible for vocals, percussion and synthesizer of the very hyped British band Hot Chip and producer of the eagerly awaited Little Boots debut album, to play a DJ set. And once again, the theory mentioned above proved right: Sometimes, people should stick to what they know best! The two-hour set was, at least in my opinion, quite dissappointing. Maybe it would be fair to say that, due to a very good preparty, I only managed to see the last thirty minutes of Joe Goddard.

Fortunately, the second headliner of the evening, London-based DJ Justin Robertson, started playing his set at around three o’clock and totally made everyone’s night! His remixes made people go bananas and when I left at around five a.m., the dancefloor was still pretty packed.

So by hiring Justin Robertson, the Pling Plong crew once again proved their talent for organising top-notch parties.

However, let’s just hope that this overrated trend of inviting bandmembers to play DJ-sets will fade away eventually…
