2008 in Fashion – The whole story

by juliachic

The end of the year 2008 is very near, so I guess it’s about time for a little review.

First of all, a very sad thing happened: Yves Saint Laurent died in June. He was without a doubt one of the most important fashion designers of all times and the influence he had on the fashion world were very visible in 2008: From A-line dresses to Smokings to safari-couture, his timeless inventions will definitely stick around in 2009 as well.

Apart from that, 2008 gave a lot of reasons to celebrate: 40 years of Sonia Rykiel, 30 years of Diesel, 20 years of Maison Martin Margiela and 15 years of Viktor and Rolf: Happy Birthday everybody!!!

2008 was also the year of the British IT-girls: We all got tired of Mischa Barton, LiLo, Nicole Richie and the rest of the Hollywood and Manhattan party crowd. So in 2008, the inspiration for our personal wardrobe (and all the hot gossip that comes with it) came from the UK: “Team Evil”, featuring Daisy Lowe, Alice Dellal, the Geldof chicks, Alexa Chung, Kelly Osbourne, Agynes Deyn etc., was in everyone’s mouth and closet. Dolce and Gabbana also paid a lovely tribute to British chic with their fall/winter collection. So London was definitely the place to be in 2008.

But to stay in Italy, home of D&G, for a while: The dresses made out of lace, which we could see in Prada’s and Miu Miu’s collections, were THE hot shit of 2008. The high street was quick to adapt the trend and so little lace dresses, shirts, skirts and blouses could be found everywhere, from Topshop to H&M. So once again Miucca Prada has proved to the world what a genius she actually is.

Speaking about H&M: In 2008, the number one high street brand from Sweden invited Rei Kawakubo from Comme des Garcons to do a collaboration. The hype was massive, expectations very high but after all, the collection was quite disappointing. Dear H&M, can you please stop getting us all excited about your collaborations with Karl, Stella, Victor and Rolf etc., when the result is always sort of lame anyways? Thank you!!

So “Don’t believe the hype” would be a good new years resolution for everybody in 2009, wouldn’t it.

However, there’s one thing to get super excited about in 2009: Phoebe Philo was appointed the new creative director of French label Celine and will present her first collection this spring. So the question is: Is Celine going to be the new Chloé? Time is surely going to tell…
